Kindle Fire is not for Business
Thursday, September 29, 2011 by Michael Lewis
On September 28, 2011, Amazon unveiled their long rumored
tablet. The Kindle Fire
will ship on November 15. The tablet will run a custom version of
Google Android. Its main selling point is its tight integration
into Amazon's e-book store, as well as its catalog of streaming
music, movies and television shows. It will also tie into Amazon's
own Android App store. All of this comes at the relatively low
price of $199.
At a first glance, the Kindle Fire is going to be a great tablet
for consuming media browsing the web and game playing. The Fire
will have access to popular webmail platforms (Gmail,Yahoo!,
Hotmail and AOL) and the web through Amazons own Amazon Silk web
browser.
However, unlike its biggest competitors, the iPad and nook
color, the Fire does not have a mobile broadband option. The tablet
is tied to wifi. It is also limited by its lack of bluetooth,
leaving only the on screen keyboard.
This tablet will prove to be great for watching a video, reading
a book, or playing Angry Birds. Unlike the iPad, it is just not
going to be a credible replacement for a laptop. If you are someone
who works on the go or travels frequently, an iPad with its support
for MS Exchange, mobile broadband, and full featured productive
apps make it a far better solution.
Until next time -
