It Might be Time to Consider Outsourcing your IT Support

Wednesday, May 04, 2011 by Michelle Hartley

For years, small businesses everywhere have considered whether they are big enough to outsource their IT Support. The common misconception is that in order to outsource your IT Support you need to be a large company that has excess funding. Yet, the truth is  outsourcing your IT support will often be more cost effective then attempting to manage it yourself. Some of the smallest businesses successfully and affordably outsource their IT Support.

An article from entrepreneur.com entitled "Kicking IT to the Curb" cites Eric Goodness, research vice president for IT services and outsourcing at technology research firm Gartner, indicating over the last 5 years, things have changed. Goodness explains that about 5 years ago most technology companies would "charge you $500 to $600 per device for remote management." Now, because the market has become more saturated with several IT options for small businesses, the price has become rather affordable. Goodness notes, "The pricing has dropped about 80% in the last 5 years, to about $75 to $100 per device."

Furthermore, businesses not only will save money from outsourcing their IT support, but it is proven to increase the overall efficiency of the business. Finding the correct provider is what is essential in providing your company the best price partnered with the best service. For instance, Switchfast specializes in handling the IT support of small to mid-sized businesses; therefore we structure all of our pricing relative to the budget and needs of small businesses.

Gartner Research projects that in 2015 businesses worldwide will spend $50.1 billion on remote IT management. As of 2010, only $25.6 billion was spent. The numbers indicate that more and more businesses are seeing the value in remote monitoring and its money saving, efficiency promoting capabilities.

The biggest question is still left unanswered, when will you know it's time to change to a remote provider? Goodness says it's time to outsource "when you decide you need to hire a full-time IT operations and management person." A full-time employee tends to be more costly and ultimately less efficient than outsourcing.
