Another look at Windows Phone 7 for Small Business

Thursday, December 01, 2011 by Michael Lewis

Last year we wrote several blog posts on what sort of impact Windows Phone 7 would have on the cell phone market at large, and for small businesses in particular. Windows Phone 7 came out with a boom of PR, but things quickly fell silent. The first batch of phones with WP7 was released within a month of Apple's iPad and first wave of mainstream Android phones. The overwhelming success of the iPad, Droid Incredible, and HTC Nexus One took the wind out of Microsoft's sales.

WP7 is far from dead. This fall, Microsoft and its hardware partners launched a new generation of handsets. While the hardware in this new crop of phones is nearly identical to past handsets, Microsoft is highlighting improvements to the OS itself. Windows Phone 7.5, or "Mango," brings deep integration of social features and search into the phone's interface. Unlike the design free-for-all of Android or the app-centric iOS, nearly all aspects of communication are baked directly into OS. We had a hard time understanding how this would work - but it turned out we were not the only ones.

To help promote Windows 7.5, Microsoft has launched a web-based demo of the interface designed to run in their competitors' mobile browsers.  The demo will guide you through different features of the OS's interface.

Windows Phone 7 has a lot that a small business person would need. With 7.5, WP now has full support for Exchange syncing. For people on the go, WP can create and edit documents in native versions of MS Office.

Until next time -
