What does the end of mobile flash mean for small businesses?

Wednesday, November 09, 2011 by Michael Lewis

This week ZDNet broke the news that Adobe would discontinue development on its Flash Plugin for mobile web browsers. Instead, they will be shifting resources to HTML5 as a platform for developing dynamic content for the web and using Adobe Air as a platform for native mobile apps. Adobe insured that they would continue to release critical bug fixes and security updates for Android OS based phones and the Blackberry PlayBook.

For small businesses, this is good news. Developing a mobile friendly website has become more important as more people are using iPhones, Android OS Phones and small tablets. With exit of flash from the mobile landscape and Adobe's full embrace of HTML5, there is no longer confusion about which technologies are going to work best on mobile devices and which are going to be (or aren't going to be) sponsored 2-4 years down the road.

Small businesses now have a clear road forward. HTML5, the umbrella term for the most recent version of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, allows for all the dynamic elements that once required Flash is now supported by most web browsers. These technologies are open and do not require additional plugins.
