Wireless: Evolving Tool or Security Nightmare?
Monday, May 24, 2010 by Bryan Anderson
With the nation's infrastructure poised to adopt WiMAX and LTE as its next-gen data
networks, consumers and businesses have already started the
movement to wireless data transmission. As wireless connections
begin to penetrate every corner of the U.S., there will be more
efficient connections and plenty of room to grow geographically and
financially.
As a small business, any unique enterprise advantage that allows
you to cut costs while remaining efficient is certainly a gain --
but is the movement to wireless technology without dangers?
We've spoken before about the potential dangers
of using a public Wi-Fi network and the malware that can infiltrate
a business network. Given the multitude of security and
connectivity risks that come with a migration to wireless
technology, a safe launch of such technology can be a lot of work
for IT departments. Wireless technology is advancing at a pace such
that even IT managers are beginning to grow frustrated.
In an article over at Networkworld.com, Matt
Hamblen talks about how "ever-evolving technologies and
increasingly demanding users" can make some IT managers feel like
the whole world is on their shoulders.
While most of the IT managers interviewed in the article are
keeping up with the proper implementation of current technology, it
is often difficult to keep them secure "in the face of a deluge of
new applications and smartphones."
"In truth, few companies truly understand the ramifications of
the future wireless transformations," said Jack Gold, an analyst at
J.Gold Associates LLC. Video streaming, real-time collaboration and
cloud-based applications accessed from mobile devices "will all
have a profound effect on corporate networks, security and
management of devices and users," he added.
While the technology world prepares for a world with faster data consumption, businesses carefully
monitor the opportunities for advancement. Without a secure, stable
infrastructure, building a business without data or user protection
can be the ultimate mistake. Don't assume "the next big move" is
"the next secure move" and don't take any shortcuts as you begin to
adopt these new technologies. There's no rush, as wireless
technology has again and again proven one thing: change and
evolution is always right around the corner.
