Small Business Owners Feel Personally Fulfilled
Friday, May 21, 2010 by Matt Hymel
It's a tough decision to walk away from a stable employment
opportunity and jump into the chaotic industry of entrepreneurship.
Still, a number of individuals attempt and succeed every year, in
some case even more than they imagined.
According to a national survey of small business owners
commissioned by hourly job site SnagAJob.com, 63% of small business owners with
2 to 100 employees say that "starting their own business has been
more personally fulfilling than they ever thought it would be."
When only including respondents who expect an increase in employee
headcount over the next 12 months, that figure jumps to 71%.
"Small businesses -- much like the hourly workers we serve --
are the backbone of America's economy," claims Shawn Boyer, CEO of
SnagAJob.com. According to Businesswire.com, Mr. Boyer was named the
National Small Business Person of the Year in 2008 for founding a
website for hourly job listings.
Another statistic revealed that 91% of business owners surveyed
say a top-three influencer in starting a business was the ability
for an entrepreneur to 'be their own boss.' In fact, almost half of
respondents (44%) listed it as their number one reason.
The survey also found that "small business owners that have
grown their companies to 11 to 100 employees say that starting a
small business has been more financially rewarding than they
expected."
All this research seems optimistic, which begs the question: if
you've been aching to get behind the wheel of your own business, do
you have what it takes to become successful both financially and
personally?
BNet.com has posted a survey created with the help of three
business professors who happen to study what makes entrepreneurs
successful. One of their main findings revealed that "great
entrepreneurs are skilled at navigating fledgling businesses
through uncharted terrain." Simply put, the good ones shine under
pressure and uncertainty.
Take their short 5-question quiz to see what you score, and let
us know if you agree with their conclusions. Just remember -- the
greatest entrepreneurs never rely on others opinions, choosing
instead to trust their own instinct and experience.
