VoIP Proves to be Effective Cost-Cutter

Thursday, May 20, 2010 by Matt Hymel

When a company begins to grow in both magnitude and geography, there are more lines of communication needed to successfully manage a single day's work. Unfortunately, most companies don't realize that they grow out of their primary technology set up and instead could be utilizing a more streamlined, effective communication system. Internal communications will help fuel the growth of your company and the efficiency of your employees.

In an article by Tim Greene over at Networkworld.com, a staffing firm named Aquent made the decision to switch from their Nortel and Inter-Tel PBXs to a VoIP provider. The change was prompted by a company-wide decision to "change its business structure so that its different lines of business were handled by dispersed teams located in different offices."

Here are a few things that CIO Larry Bolick needed:

-          Incoming calls re-directed to another member regardless of where a member was located

-          Forward calls to other devices such as handhelds

-          Send voice mail as e-mail attachments

-          Move to a phone service with all the gear (except handsets) based in the provider's network

-          Move to VoIP to benefit from integrating communications with other business processes

His company ended up finding a service that matched their needs, which also included "a flat fee for unlimited users, trans-office hunt group support, a unified numbering plan, redirection of calls to mobile phones and browser-based call control."

Even counties are researching and proposing the switch to VoIP. In a local Tampa Bay newspaper, an article talks about Pinellas County and their plans on cost-saving over the next few years. One of their proposals included switching to VoIP and consolidating the county's phone systems into one that served everyone. Making the switch, they claim, would save the county $770,000 a year.

Take a look at your company's technology assets and re-evaluate your needs and desires - they will grow and change along with your company's success.

Until Next Time -
