Offsite Backup Saves Time, Money and Frustration

Monday, May 10, 2010 by Matt Hymel

As users become emotionally attached to their personal computers, cell phones, and other technology, it's easy to forget that a device's life span is probably no longer than a few years. Technology may be an integral part of an individual's life, but any physical device is bound to malfunction, break, or run its course.

The enterprise industry concentrates on stability, consistency, and durability, choosing their equipment based on its value as a long term investment. While this is a prudent move, they often forget that the most important aspect of technology is the data produced on it.

Why is it that most companies invest in the next "thing" in technology but forget to address the possibility of massive data loss?

Research has proven over and again that businesses forget to back up data, fail to protect their systems from malware, and lose sight of the most consistent threat: human error.

Consider that 49% of small businesses do not backup their data on a daily basis, and 96% of all business workstations are not being backed up. While servers are typically backed up, companies rarely back up individual PCs containing valuable data generated by employees every day.

Research from The Antivirus Insider indicates that 25% of all PC users suffer from data loss each year and Boston Computing Network recently released a study showing that 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster. The Antivirus Insider estimates the total loss at $12 Billion per year.

It seems that for small businesses, the question of data loss is not if it will occur, but when.

These are some fairly large - and scary - numbers for any small business owner. Luckily, there are ways to backup your data in a secure, cost-effective way that will allow your company to be protected from any unwanted disasters.

There are a lot of back-up options out there to consider. If you need advice on which option is best for your business, contact Switchfast for more information at 773-241-3007 or thefutureofit@switchfast.com.
