More Hardware Investment Means More IT Spending

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 by Bryan Anderson

First quarter statistics have shown two things: Overall PC sales have improved compared to last year and the requirement for more hardware (mobile PCs and other network devices) has driven a growth in IT budgets.

According to an article over at Computerworld.com, PC makers sold 24.2% more machines in the first quarter of 2010 than in than in the same period last year. This growth even comes after a 15.2% increase in fourth quarter sales.

Analysts credited the increase to "historically low PC prices and an increasing demand for laptop and netbooks," something that small businesses heavily rely on for mobile internet and software access. Later on, the article quotes a research analyst saying that "this is in addition to ongoing consumer appetite for more mobile devices as price points remain attractive and the multi-device per user environment expands."

When it comes to the corporate world, investments in computer hardware will further push the "tech recovery" in 2010.  According to an article over at CIO.com, Forrester Research and Gartner both released IT spending forecasts, and both stand firm on a "positive growth in hardware and software spending."

According to Forrester numbers, IT outsourcing is set to increase by 3.8% and software growth by 7%. Forrester points out that in the U.S. computer equipment spending is set to increase by more than 11%, mainly due to replacement of old PCs, servers and storage equipment.

Overall, research indicates a 5.3% increase from IT spending a year ago. With more commitment to technology, is your IT budget being managed effectively?

Until next time -
