Businesses Begin the Windows 7 Migration

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 by Bryan Anderson

It was only a matter of time before businesses - both small and large - would demand and embrace the newest version of Microsoft's operating system. Windows 7 is truly living up to its hype, as both consumers and enterprise have upgraded to the latest edition.

Although some businesses may take longer than others, there is a general willingness and positive attitude toward the migration to Windows 7.

In fact, a recent survey which was conducted of 923 businesses found that 16 percent of businesses have already started running Windows 7, while an additional 42% plan on upgrading or switching to Windows 7 by the end of 2010.  Overall, 87% of those polled are planning to move to Windows 7 at some point.

By comparison, three months after its release, 90% of respondents are planning to switch to Windows 7, while only 47% of business professionals polled in the past said that they would move to Windows Vista - nine months after release!

Major concerns for the OS are down across the board with performance, stability, and security dropping 22%, 21%, and 7% respectively from the last survey to the present.

One article points out seven improved security features found in Windows 7, including DirectAccess, which allows remote users to secure their networks over the Internet without a VPN, and Biometric security, which is integrated in the OS instead of supported by third-party software.

Small business owners in particular are hopping onto Windows 7 quickly because of the user experience and upgraded software capabilities. Windows VP Brad Brooks, according to zdnet.com, sees signs that small businesses really want Windows 7, pointing out that retailers are stocking more Professional versions of the OS as opposed to the Home Premium edition.

If you don't feel comfortable with your current operating system, you should try out the new interface and settings of Windows 7 to see if the changes would benefit your small business.

Until next time -
