Celebrating 25 Years of Dot Com Has its Drawbacks
Monday, March 15, 2010 by Bryan Anderson
It was on this day, March 15, 1985, that the first .com Internet
domain name was registered to a computer systems company by the
name of Symbolics. Symbolics.com became the first known URL of the
internet's existence.
Its success may not rival Facebook, but its significance is
certainly notable.
Unknown to this Massachusetts-based company, the age of digital
news and social participation would arise over the next quarter
century. And now, in 2010, we've only scratched the surface when it
comes to internet speed and mobility.
In an article at SFgate.com, the founders of Symbolic couldn't
recall what is now looked at as a momentous occasion. The
originally public company was eventually privatized by a firm that
took the same name.
The article points out how close the internet came to being a
dot COR (short for corporate) instead of a dot COM (short for
commercial). Imagine your current domain name is
www.companyname.cor.
Although Symbolics did not connect us with friends or allow us
to search the web, the internet has revolutionized personal and
professional industries. This article points out some of the most
important websites over the last 25 years, including Amazon,
Facebook, Hotmail, and of course Google.
With great success comes great risk. As time goes on, the
internet is being relied on as an individual's primary "location"-
placing more time and responsibility toward internet activity. This
requires an added emphasis on internet safety and security. As
technology evolves, there are industries struggling to protect
their businesses, employees, and consumers.
According to a report from ic3.gov from a TechJaws.com post, online fraud losses went
from $265 million in 2008 to almost $560 million in 2009, more than
doubling in a year's time. This number has been increasing steadily
since 2005, and has increased year by year with the exception of
2003-2004. Email scams, payment frauds, and identity theft are only
a few ways that individuals lose hundreds or thousands of dollars
online.
Do you feel safe with your 'investments' on the internet? Is
your business as safe and secure as it should be? Make sure to keep
up with security updates and Microsoft bulletins when
applicable.
Until next time -
