Why Your Social Media Image Matters – Especially for SEO/SEM
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 by Matt Hymel
Whether you're an adult searching for the local fresh-produce
store or a business combing the internet for the latest technology news, search engines have
benefited from a plethora of information. With this jumble of facts
and research, search engines like Google establish a page rank
algorithm that is designed to produce an ideal result for your
search terms.
But what if you're not everyone?
An article on AdAge.com written
by Eric Swayne details the idea of 'friend sourcing' - a form of
crowd sourcing that allows search engines to consider the advice
you trust most, that which comes from people you trust. No matter
how advanced marketing gets, the epic foundation that is 'word of
mouth' will always carry immense influences in consumer and
business decision making.
The author gives three fundamental shifts that marketers should
be aware of:
- What brands say and do in social media has an increasingly
direct effect on how they will appear in search engines, both in
search results position and in description.
- The more friends in my social circle (aka my "social graph")
talk about your brand, the more likely I am to see your brand,
click on your brand's listing and become another voice talking
about your brand.
- Many brands have recognized that their impact in social media
is both powerful and tangible, but now that impact will easily
spill over into other channels. "Social" isn't just a silo in your
channel mix anymore, and the lines will be increasingly blurred
with mass media, CRM, SEO/SEM or other channels.
