Will 2010 Bring "Hybrid Clouds" ?
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 by Matt Hymel
With the battle between on-premise and off-premise
infrastructures raging on, many companies have chosen a side and
dug in. However, as cloud computing becomes the more popular trend,
traditional private resources may have to give in to some sort of
off-premise framework.
Given the trend toward cloud computing, the birth of "hybrid
clouds" may take over the infrastructure sky, so to
say. Corporations have considered this move for reasons
ranging from financial to flexibility to control or data
security. Although many view the cloud as a good opportunity
for a range of management, "corporations have longstanding cultural
biases toward keeping core IT assets in-house that are unlikely to
change anytime soon," according to Gary Orenstein.
In an article from Gigaom.com, Orenstein analyzes different
companies who have provided options regarding the balance of
physical on-premise and cloud servers.
Each company should evaluate their own needs, and the hybrid
cloud may not be prudent for certain ventures. But from solutions
like VMware or Azure, both mentioned in the article, there are
several ways that open-source selections can save money or even
increase flexibility.
Certainly, cloud technology is just cracking the surface with
companies and corporations. It's not a bad idea to hop aboard while
the trend is hot.
