Exchange 2007 Support May be Snow Leopard’s Killer Feature

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 by Michael Holley

It's no secret that Apple is trying hard to win a piece of Microsoft's precious enterprise audience with the release of the latest version of its OS X, called Snow Leopard. The evidence lies in the upgrades, nearly all of which fall under the "function over form" catgory, which is not the Apple norm.

Where Apple's attempt at a proprietary security solution may have done more harm than good, the killer feature, largely overlooked, just might be Snow Leopard's native support for Microsoft's Exchange 2007. In the past, Office 2008 users had to settle for Entourage, which allowed access to Exchange mailboxes, but only allowed limited access to contacts and calendar, two features that have been instrumental Exchange's rise to domination.

Now, all you have to do to access Exchange from a Mac is enter your email/password in the Mail application. You can then access your appointments and contacts through iCal and Address Book, respectively. This feature, alone, should be worth the $29 upgrade to Mac users who work in an Exchange environment.

Best,

Michael Holley
