IE Now with HTML5 Compatibility, Thanks to Google
Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Michael Holley
Google has released a developer version of a plug-in for
Internet Explorer that allows it to run previously unsupported open
source technologies such as HTML5 and some advanced Javascripts.
The plug-in is called Google Chrome Frame, and it is designed to be
compatible with IE 6, IE 7, and IE 8 on Windows Vista and XP SP2
platforms.
The version available now is an early release meant primarily
for developers and members of Google's open source
community for testing. A more stable version meant for the
general public remains under development. A key motivator behind
this project is likely to bring full compatibility for Google Wave to IE users, who still make up a
vast portion of the market. Microsoft has been oft-criticized for
refusing to comply with emerging web standards and open source
technologies, but its stranglehold on the business market make it
impossible to ignore for web app developer s. Google claims its
intent is to make it easier for developers to workaround IE's
disadvantages without having to sacrifice functionality.
