European ‘Cyber-gangs’ targeting small to medium-sized businesses
Thursday, August 27, 2009 by Michael Holley
The LA Times has reported a shocking increase in wire transfer
fraud targeted at US-based small to medium-sized businesses over
the past year. According the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network,
the 2008 figure was up by a factor of 58%.
Most victims are infected by malware via email, in the typical
password-phishing manner. This means it's more important than ever
to ensure that all employees are taking extra caution with links
and attachments. It's also extremely important to make sure your
antivirus software is up-to-date.
Don't expect much help from banks if you find out that you've
been attacked. Legislation protects consumers at a much higher
level than it protects businesses, and as a result, banks are
spending much time or effort on security for businesses either. If
you think you've been attacked, act immediately. Companies that
bank online have about two business days to dispute unauthorized
transactions before chances of recovery become hopeless.
