Windows Server 2008 R2 Released to Software Assurance Subscribers

Thursday, August 20, 2009 by Michael Holley

Windows Server 2008 R2 was released last Wednesday, a week ahead of schedule. If you're a volume license and a Software Assurance subscriber, the software is available to you. Non-Software Assurance open licensees will be able to acquire the new build on September 1 without having to buy any new client access licenses. Everyone else can get it on September 14, the retail release date.

Major Upgrades from Windows Server 2008 R1, as reported by InformationWeek:

  • Live Migration - the ability to easily move virtualized workloads around your data center
  • DirectAccess (Windows 7 required) - eliminates the need for a VPN to access server resources. Designed to make it easier for mobile users to navigate the changing conditions of the local network
  • BranchCache (Windows 7 required) - caches downloaded content and accelerates data transfer, freeing up and optimizing network bandwidth
  • BitLocker to Go - encrypts USB keys
  • AppLocker - allows administrators to centrally control which applications can be installed and used on network connected machines
  • Active Directory Recycling Bin - groups and users can be easily restored via command line

Windows Server 2008 R2 will be available in 64-bit only, although Microsoft has a workaround that will allow 32-bit apps to run if absolutely necessary.
