Beware Rogueware: Fake security software that is becoming big business
Thursday, July 30, 2009 by Michael Holley
Cybercriminals have begun their next stage of evolution. Instead
of tricking us into handing over our information so they can use it
to steal our money, they're just tricking us into handing over our
money directly.
As reported in InformationWeek, the latest trend in
cybercrime is something called "rogueware," which is malware that
acts as commercial security software, but really does nothing
beyond collecting a monthly bill. The initial code is spread just
like a traditional virus or worm, usually through a link or file
download in an email spam, twitter feed, search ad, or similar
medium. Once the malicious code is on someone's computer, it
produces a fake warning of a virus detection, along with a promise
to clean the problem up and prevent further infection for a monthly
fee. Unwary users will sign up for the "service" with their credit
cards, thinking they've downloaded legitimate software that will
protect them.
Real security software is essential, and is the best way to
avoid the rogueware threat on a person-by-person basis. However, a
little awareness goes a long way as well. Since the typical
rogueware victim is less computer-savvy than the average user, be
sure to spread the news to your family, friends, and networks.
