Switchfast Blog: The Future of IT
Non-Profits can gain a major edge using a CMS
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 by Michael Holley
It's no secret that the internet is providing more opportunities than
ever to reach your target audience, whether that means your
members, donors, or potential members and donors. Because it's no
secret, however, everyone is battling for the attention of the
masses. In order to break through, you got to do something to get
noticed. Take it from the tech-savvy rabbi: the name of the game
engaging your audience. The only way to stay relevant on today's
world wide web is to constantly produce new content.
Traditionally, this demand has put non-profit organizations at a
serious disadvantage. Unless an organization had a web developer on
staff, it would have to constantly pay its web design firm to
update the site. The type of spending power necessary to make this
approach effective is generally well beyond the budget of the
typical non-profit.
So, what? Is maintaining a web presence simply beyond the budget
of the average non-profit?
Fortunately, the answer is no, thanks to the recent trend
surrounding the use of a Content Management System (CMS) to update
websites. A CMS is a software application that allows users to make
content updates to websites through a word processor-like
interface. This means that any authorized employee or volunteer can
make content changes or additions with only basic computer
knowledge. Imagine, updating your website as often as you want
using only existing resources!
Now for the best part: a CMS can be had for cheap.
Depending upon the system and how it's licensed, it's totally
realistic to find a CMS/hosting package for less than a hundred
bucks a month. That's a small price to pay for the ability to
maintain a dynamic website that keeps your audience coming back for
more!
