Cisco claims big internal savings through telecommuting
Monday, June 29, 2009 by Michael Holley
Since CEO John Chambers requested a major ramp-up in teleworking
within the company 18 months ago, Cisco has drastically increased
use of its own remote work package among its employees to an
estimated 20,000 users.
According to PC World, a recent survey cites
significant benefits to Cisco's internal environment, both in terms
of finance and employee satisfaction, as a direct result of the
telecommuting push. Respondents claimed higher productivity,
improved timeliness, and improved ability to communicate and
collaborate with coworkers. About two-thirds of respondents claimed
an overall increase in work quality, and 80% claimed an improvement
in quality of life.
Perhaps even more compelling for small business-owners are
Cisco's reported savings figures. Based on standard hourly billing
rates, the company estimates productivity savings of about $277
million. Cisco also estimates that its employees saved over $10
million in fuel consumption.
While those figures exist on a much larger scale than most of us
are dealing with, we can be sure that the potential for savings is
real. As wireless and mobile technologies improve and the pressure
to trim operational expenses increases, we will continue to see a
growing level of telecommuters in the workplace. The benefits -
both organizational and financial - are becoming harder to
ignore.
Best,
