Another "No Backup" Horror Story
Friday, June 26, 2009 by Michael Holley
John Lechowicz, one of our software engineers, spotted this painful story chronicling the demise of a
small chain of pet stores thanks to poor IT-related management.
There are two lessons to be learned from MegaPetCo's unfortunate
circumstances. The first is that cutting corners can come back to
bite you in a very big way. In addition to being inefficient from
an operations standpoint, their unorganized database put them in
the position that ultimately caused the end of the business.
The second is that everyone should have some form of backup or
disaster recovery for their data, period. Regardless of how poorly
MegaPetCo's database was organized and managed, a good backup could
have prevented the ensuing disaster from affecting the company's
future entirely.
So make sure sure you aren't putting yourself or your business
in a position to be compromised! Data backup is like your house's
smoke detectors: you don't need them every day, but when you
do, they can be the difference between life and death.
Best,
Michael Holley
