Clearwire to launch 4G WiMax in Chicago this summer

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 by Michael Holley

Today marks the official launch of Clearwire's WiMax in Atlanta, the company's largest rollout to date. The completion of Atlanta, the third WiMax city (behind Portland, OR and Baltimore, MD), means that Las Vegas and Chicago are in line next, with deployment set for this summer.

Clearwire, who has named its WiMax service "CLEAR," boasts that users will experience DSL-like speeds on its mobile broadband network. Pricing ranges from $10 (for a 24-hour pass) to $40 per month for mobile internet plans.

The implications of this launch are potentially huge for businesses in Chicago. Although wireless broadband has allowed professionals to work from anywhere for a while now, there have always been limitations based on slow download and upload speed. With download speeds from 4Mbit/sec to 15Mbit/sec, WiMax connections could enable mobile workers to access and upload large documents or files from server clouds that would normally take too long to transfer.

While not everyone will have the need to justify another telecom bill for wireless access, this launch represents another huge step in the "make offices obsolete" movement.

Best,

Michael Holley

Are all the waves/frequencies, whatever is transmitting through the air pose any health hazards? Doesn't Europe also question this?
