High tech lighting can save up to 40%
Tuesday, June 16, 2009 by Michael Holley
HID Laboratories is a company that signifies a
time when even the simplest of technology will be managed and
regulated with the utmost precision -- using computers of course.
As CNET News reports, Tuesday marks the
official launch of the California-based company's SmartPod
Luminaire, a lighting fixture that can allegedly reduce commercial
lighting costs by 40%.
The SmartPod works by replacing the ballast for the lamp, which
controls the amount of current that goes to a lamp. The SmartPod's
construction and electronic greatly reduce incumbent energy
inefficiencies in standard ballasts while introducing advanced
regulation features.
The SmartPod can dim or deactivate lights based on preset
conditions, such as time of day or in conjunction with sensors that
sense the presence or absence of someone in a room. The internal
chip gathers complex data and metrics that can help a company or
utility adjust lighting load for peak performance. As of now, the
settings are controlled via laptop connected directly to the
SmartPod, but HID Labs plans to introduce a wireless networking
feature soon.
Although energy efficiency is popular right now because of its
relatively quick ROI, HID faces competition from newer compact
fluorescent bulbs.
Energy efficiency is a big positive for both consumer and
environment, but HID's high tech lighting raises an additional
issue that is equally important: what else could we be doing to
bring cost down? What other simple technologies do we take for
granted that could be modernized and improved to provide a higher
quality experience?
