Rapid growth in mobile technology is changing the face of business
Thursday, June 11, 2009 by Michael Holley
The past twelve months have bore witness to an
incredible jump in technology related to mobile devices.
Smartphones, netbooks, and now smartbooks, are getting smaller, faster, and
more feature-rich at an astonishing rate. The release of products
like VMWare's MVP and incredibly small new
processors from companies like Qualcomm and Freescale have driven this growth, which shows
no signs of stopping.
All of this progress is quickly making it possible for many
people to do most of their work away from a PC. We're not just
talking about working from home anymore; we're talking about
working from anywhere, with or without a laptop. Smartphones and
other devices loaded with the latest mobile operating systems like
Android or Windows Mobile are running business
applications like Office, blurring (or erasing) the traditional
boundaries of the workplace. You can't do absolutely everything on
a phone or mobile internet device (MID) that you can on a PC yet,
but that will likely change very soon.
If you're not already embracing the mobile bandwagon, there are
a number of potential benefits to consider before making the
plunge. The most compelling of them, however, just might be
cost-savings. Many companies are looking to mobile technologies
like cloud computing and MID to help them shed some or all of the
costs of maintaining or expanding a physical office.
No matter which benefits seem most pertinent to your operation,
keep an eye on this booming trend for more developments in the near
future. At this rate, it won't be long before the allure of the
mobile office will be impossible to ignore.
Best,
Michael Holley
