Google: "The Web has won"
Thursday, May 28, 2009 by Michael Holley
Google has been aggressively pushing the adoption of web-based
applications for years, and, as TechWeb reports, have finally declared
"victory." At Google's developer conference on Wednesday, VP of
engineering Vic Gundotra heralded the web as today's dominant
programming model. They're expecting the advent of
HTML 5 to equalize any remaining advantages that hardware-based
applications may have, allow all focus to be on the web for its
ease of use and nearly unlimited accessibility. Later, Gundotra
added that he eagerly awaits Microsoft to follow suit.
What does this mean for small business?
It's another big piece of evidence that, at least in the eyes of
our developers, cloud computing is here to stay. With the bulk of
development resources focused on mobile technologies like web-based
applications, lightweight hardware, and VPN security, the benefits
of the cloud computing model are likely to grow fairly rapidly and
permeate the market from all angles.
This news is no cause to make drastic changes, but it's
definitely something to think about as you make changes going
forward, especially because one of the most attractive benefits of
cloud computing for small business is its scalability.
Best,
Michael Holley
