Uncontrollable environmental conditions make the ability to work remotely a powerful tool
Monday, May 11, 2009 by Michael Holley
The recent news about the swine flu outbreak raises an interesting
thought: There are a lot of unforeseeable events that can shorten
or eliminate our productivity at a moment's notice. Whether it's
disease, traffic construction, a blizzard, kids staying home from school, or anything
else, a poorly-timed mini-crisis can wreak havoc on deadlines at
work.
Of course, none of these setbacks are new; we've been dealing with
them on a case by case basis for years. Still, how much more
efficient would things be if there was a workaround for these
unforeseen issues? How much time (and money) do companies and
employees lose because they're unexpectedly unable to work?
With the rising popularity of VPN technology and low-cost
netbooks, these lost workdays are becoming a problem of the past.
More companies, large and small, are finding it cost-effective to
implement technology that allows employees to work from anywhere
that they have an internet connection. Workers armed with a
Blackberry and a laptop can be just as productive at home, on a
plane, or in a hotel as they are at the office. Not only can this
technology minimize unnecessary time off, but it can also increase
job satisfaction.
"I've been working at home one day per week for about five years,"
says Switchfast's Carrie Krakowski. "I feel more focused at home
because there are fewer distractions, and I have access to
everything that I would at the office through the VPN."
Technology continues to tear down the walls of the conventional
workplace, and our bottom line is better as a result.
