Mac Users Should be Aware that Security Threats are Growing
Thursday, April 23, 2009 by Michael Holley
For years, Mac users have enjoyed virtual immunity from security
threats and viruses thanks to their relative obscurity in the
business world. But as Apple gains market share from the PC market,
creating viruses that affect Macintosh systems becomes a more
profitable possibility for criminals.
In fact, it appears that the threat may have already begun. As
CNN reports here, Symantec has announced what may be the first
legitimate widespread Macintosh trojan threat. The threat affected
just a few thousand Macs, far less than major PC threats have
affected over the years (such as the recent Conficker.c virus that
affected up to 10 million PCs nationwide), and certainly is no
reason for Mac users to panic, but the message here is to be aware
that things may be changing.
The key to effective security has always been preparation.
Whether your business is a Windows, Mac, or Linux based
environment, you need to take proactive measures to protect your
data and hardware. Whether that's through a reliable backup,
antivirus software, or both, an investment in a solid security
solution is worth its weight in gold. It only takes one devastating
surprise bug to bring down an unprepared company!
Best,
Mike
