Microsoft Opens World-Class Data Center on Chicago's Outskirts
Monday, November 02, 2009 by Michael Holley
As CNET reports, Microsoft has opened what it says may be the
world's largest data center in a slightly secret location on the
outskirts of Chicago.
On the inside, the building looks more like a parking lot than a
traditional data center, thanks to Microsoft's new modular approach
to its server stacks. Server capacity can be added in modular
"clusters" simply by parking them in some open space and connecting
them to the network. Microsoft is excited about this approach
because it will allow them to quickly and cheaply upgrade capacity
as needed.
Exactly which services the data center will be supporting is
unknown to the public, but it's speculated that Chicago's location
will be largely dedicated the Bing and Microsoft's forthcoming
cloud OS, Azure.
