Good SEO Takes Time, but the Results are Well Worth the Wait
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 by Michael Holley
I've emphasized the importance of
SEO before, but I wanted to make a different point today. As a
company or organization that is paying for SEO work, the toughest
thing to do is to be patient. When you invest marketing dollars,
you want to see a return on that investment.
Patience is essential, however. Google goes to great lengths to
ensure that its searches cannot be exploited at the consumers'
expense. With Google (and its 60%+ market share), it's all about
"trust," and Google measures trust by looking at usage, linking
trends, and changes in your site over time. For competitive search
phrases, there is absolutely no way to gain immediate results
without being penalized later. It's just the way it is, and while
it may be frustrating for marketers, we're all better off for it in
the long run. Google's results are the gold standard. If they
weren't, no one would use it.
Case in point, and the inspiration for this post:
Sometime yesterday, after a nearly six-month campaign,
Switchfast reached page one, rank five, for our most competitive
organic keyphrase.

Of course, it's too early to measure the return on this, but I
can say that we had a huge spike in traffic late yesterday, and so
far this morning we're on pace to break all of our single day
traffic records.
It's best to consider SEO a relatively long term investment
right from the start, not unlike most other worthwhile marketing
initiatives. SEO still remains one of the most affordable and
lucrative marketing investments available to us, and we can all
depend on it to provide value if we just give it time.
Best,
